The 7-step approach to FMEA development

The FMEA guidelines developed by the industry associations VDA and AIAG contain several changes that enable European and North American suppliers to map a uniform FMEA business process including a collection of method tools. The aim is to produce an accurate, complete and robust FMEA that meets all customer requirements. The FMEA is more than a method.

Find out which steps to follow for FMEA development since the manual was published and how to meet the standards. In the context of FMEA, integration has never been as important as it is today. Integration has never been more important in the context of FMEA than it is today.

It is not enough to create FMEAs separately from the product development process using traditional tools such as spreadsheets. It is now defined as an important, integral part of the development process. This gives higher priority to communication between the process participants across all development methods.

The new standards make FMEAs an integral part of the product development process, from the first requirement to the final product.

The 7 steps of FMEA

Step 1: Planning and Preparation

Project plan and DFMEA activities

The integrated action management tool provides: the mapping of the 5 T's, project plan, team composition, Milestones and tracking of all organizational tasks related to the FMEA project.

Use of knowledge already gained (lessons learned)

Using knowledge and reusing existing FMEAs is a central recommendation of the working group. e1ns uses a template management process with versioning, systematic updating and automatic user notification. Use of knowledge already gained (lessons learned)

Steps 2-4: Structure, function and failure analysis

System analysis
The methodology of e1ns.architect allows you to systematically and very quickly build a model of the system architecture and create the functional and error network. Without media disruption, requirements are formulated in a mutual process, their functional implementation is described and possible failures are documented.

Visualization
Alternatively, the system model is built and edited using the block diagram (SysML) or, in the case of PFMEAs, using the process flow diagram.

FMEA forms
All data from the system analysis automatically fills the FMEA form. The new harmonization forms are available in e1ns. The modular method concept from e1ns enables the configuration of any forms and data types adapted to the needs of a company.

Step 5: Risk analysis

Task Priority (AP) replaces the RPN
With the new FMEA forms in e1ns, you use the recommended assessment catalogs and use task priority (AP) to identify when action is required.

Step 6: Optimization

Tracking measures and evaluating effectiveness
Project managers organize and track measures via the integrated measures management e1ns.actions.
Those responsible for measures receive regular information about their measures by email or use the overviews on the web for processing.

Step 7: Documentation of results

Documentation of the FMEA and the project results for management and customers
All development documents are stored in versioned form in e1ns directly in the system structure with the corresponding system elements and can therefore be found at any time. Product files are created simply at the push of a button. With a dashboard, you have all relevant key figures at glance.
